After the Dallas Cowboys finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs in 2024, they must upgrade their flawed roster.
To do that, Dallas needs cap space. On Tuesday, star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb helped them create more. ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Lamb restructured his contract, saving the Cowboys $20M in cap room.
Some of Lamb’s 2025 base salary was converted into a signing bonus. According to Spotrac, he will now make $1.170 million next season. When a user on X questioned why Lamb would do this, he sent a clear message: He wants to win his first Super Bowl.
Since the Cowboys traded WR Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in March 2022, they have lacked a clear complement to Lamb in the passing game.
In 15 games in 2024, Lamb tied for seventh in the NFL in receptions (101) and tied for eighth in the league in receiving yards (1,194). Jalen Tolbert, meanwhile, was the Cowboys’ No. 2 WR. In 17 games, he had 49 receptions for 610 yards.
The Cowboys finished 11th in the league in passing yards (227.2) last season, but their receiving corps could still use more depth.
With the increased cap space, Dallas could add another WR, via free agency or a trade. ESPN’s Dan Graziano recently reported the Cowboys may try to acquire Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp “if his price drops far enough.”
Plus, the contract change seems like a minor financial sacrifice for Lamb. In 2024, he signed a four-year, $136 million deal, which made him the second-highest-paid wideout in the league behind Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings.
