The Miami Dolphins have a rather lengthy to-do list this offseason, and one of those items is, or should be, to find an experienced and capable backup quarterback option behind Tua Tagovailoa.

Such an option is on the verge of becoming available.

Per NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Las Vegas Raiders are releasing QB Gardner Minshew when the new league year begins on March 12.

Minshew is someone who is on the tier of strong backup/fringe starter.  A sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Washington State, he’s still got plenty of juice left in his arm at the age of 28

Minshew has started 46 games in his career for the Jags, Eagles, Colts, and Raiders, sporting a 17-29 record.  He’s completed 63.3% of his throws for 11,950 yards with 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.

Last year was poor year for Minshew, with 9 touchdowns to 10 interceptions with a 2-7 record with Las Vegas.  However, it’s also impossible to deny the lack of weapons the Raiders were dealing with outside of rookie tight end Brock Bowers, particularly after the trade of Davante Adams – who only played the first three weeks for Las Vegas – to the Jets in mid-October.

Plenty of teams will have interest in Minshew.  Finding backups who can give you starter production in stretches isn’t a common thing in the league, and it’s something Miami should be looking for as a priority this offseason.  The question is whether any will give him a look as a starter this offseason.

If not, then Miami should be an attractive option with a slew of weapons on offense – provided the Dolphins can afford to make a competitive financial offer.
