Stephen Curry is establishing himself as arguably one of the best point guards ever to play basketball, though he’s closely matched with other historic names. To establish himself as the undisputed best in his position, Curry needs to add more championships under his belt. This is something that the Golden State Warriors star is motivated to do, as he revealed to NBC Sports.
“Honestly, it’s the only thing I’m really playing for at this point. It’s the only thing that matters in the sense of accomplishment. I still love to play the game and I still love to come to work every day. Basketball is still fun for me. The challenge of trying to figure out how to win on a nightly basis, I still get up for it.”
“There’s so much more that’s going on off the court that can try to drag you down a little bit or distract you. Trying to battle is great. The league has changed so much, and trying to reimagine how it would look for the Golden State Warriors in the 24-25 season to win a championship is totally different than even ’22. It’s totally different than ’17 or ’18 or ’15.”
“All that goes into the obsession of trying to be the best basketball player that I can be, and trying to lift my team up and have them lift me up to be able to be relevant in that conversation. And then, obviously, in the historical realm of basketball, there is another level. You talk about five-time champions and beyond that. It’s a good place to start from, but I definitely want to get greedy.”
Curry’s admission that he wants to get ‘greedy’ for more titles must be a relief to fans who were wondering if the dynasty days are in the rearview. This also should be a slight nudge to the front office who are still yet to find him a co-star on offense after their failed pursuit of Lauri Markkanen and Paul George this summer.
Steph is averaging 23.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists this season, His production is marginally worse but the Warriors are playing an overall team-oriented style which has seen them jump out to a 10-3 record and occupy the No. 1 seed in the West right now.
The Warriors Need To Make A Major Trade
The Warriors are having success this season on the backs of a 12-man rotation where almost everybody is a positive shooter. But this depth also causes the Warriors to struggle based on when players are cold or not. Curry started the season unimpressively, but the Warriors kept winning because Buddy Hield was averaging over 20 points on efficient shooting.
Even though the Warriors are 3-0 when Curry misses games this season, it’s time for the franchise to consolidate their depth into a star-caliber player to ensure they are better-equipped for the Playoffs. Their strong start to the season gives them the luxury to wait till the trade deadline before committing to acquiring a new player.
The Warriors’ defense is already solid, so the balance of which players to send out in a trade for a star-level player will be interesting. They can’t keep protecting Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski, especially with their weak starts to the year, so we likely will see some changes over this season.
