We’ll know more about San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa’s injury later on Wednesday, but that could be the reason Jonathan Garvin was re-signed.
Per his agency, the San Francisco 49ers are re-signing defensive end Jonathan Garvin to the practice squad.
Garvin, who signed a one-year deal with the 49ers back in training camp, has been on and off the active roster and practice squad since. Prior to joining the Niners, Garvin was in the UFL. Before his UFL stint, Garvin played with the Green Bay Packers from 2020-2022. Is this an information grab? Or are the 49ers looking for another body in practice or potential help on special teams?
The team released Garvin back in September. He has not played a snap on defense or special teams for the 49ers or any team this year.
Is this a sign that Nick Bosa isn’t healthy? Or does the team intend to rely on its depth? That may be the question we need to ask. Yetur Gross-Matos returned to the lineup last week, but besides Leonard Floyd and Sam Okuayinonu, Bosa is the only other edge rusher. When he’s in the game, Robert Beal Jr. has given the defense next to nothing. So, that could be the reason we’re seeing the team bring back a familiar face in Garvin.
We’ll know more about Bosa’s injury status Wednesday afternoon once Kyle Shanahan speaks. But if he can’t practice, Garvin gives the team another body during the week while Bosa rests.
