The Dallas Cowboys haven’t been particularly aggressive in the early stages of NFL free agency, which opened on Monday. However, that’s exactly what Dallas owner Jerry Jones made clear when speaking to the media following Zack Martin’s retirement.
This stance seemed to undermine what his son, Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ co-owner, had previously stated—that the team would be “selectively aggressive” in their approach.
“I don’t think aggressive is the right word,” Jones said. “I’m not looking at free agency as a place to fill voids.”
Yet, several hours into free agency, with growing concerns that Dallas could lose running back Rico Dowdle, the team has agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with former Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams.
While this move addresses some of the team’s needs, it hasn’t exactly thrilled Cowboys fans, especially as other teams around them, including division rival Washington Commanders, have made major signings.
“As long as Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones are in control, nothing will ever change,” A fan said.
Someone else added, “Jerry Jones can’t keep getting away with this.”
“Cowboys won’t do anything until Jerry Jones gets out of the way,” Another fan posted.
One more fan commented, Doesn’t move the needle at all but Jerry Jones and nem love moves like this.”

The idea of drafting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, who had an historic season and helped lead his team to a College Football Playoff appearance, has been a popular one among Cowboys fans. Jeanty has expressed a desire to play for Dallas, and many have hoped the team would target him in the draft.
However, this signing, while not necessarily ruling out the possibility of using their first-round pick on a running back, raises some concerns—especially considering the Cowboys’ draft history over the past few seasons.
