Kelce was considering hanging up his cleats
Travis Kelce isn’t going anywhere, at least not yet. After months of speculation about whether the Kansas City Chiefs‘ star tight end would retire following the team’s Super Bowl 59 defeat, head coach Andy Reid has finally confirmed that Kelce is “all in” for the 2025 NFL season.
Following their crushing 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which ended the Chiefs’ bid for a historic three-peat, questions swirled around Kelce‘s future. At 35, and with a Hall of Fame career already under his belt, Kelce had reportedly been weighing his options. But Reid has put those doubts to rest.
Speaking on The Bettor Angle podcast, Reid praised Kelce’s dedication to the game and his unique role on the team: “He said he was coming back, and he’s all in. He’s a heck of a player.
“I mean, listen, he’s getting older, but you’re talking about the guy that’s going to go down as maybe the best of all time at that position. Even if he’s a step slower or whatever people are saying, he’s still one of the best in the National Football League and, in my eyes, he’s the best.”
Kelce Addresses Super Bowl Struggles and Motivation to Return
Despite his decision to return, Kelce has openly admitted to struggling during the Super Bowl. On his New Heights podcast, Kelce reflected on his performance and the disappointment of falling short when it mattered most.
“I feel like I owe the guys that I come into that building with a whole lot more effort and focus,” Kelce said. “I just don’t know what it was during that game, man, I wasn’t at my best.”
As he reviewed footage from the game, Kelce expressed frustration at himself: “The more that I see clips or watch the film and put myself back into those moments, man, I’m just like ‘what the f**k’.”
His brother and podcast co-host, Jason Kelce, tried to offer reassurance, urging Travis not to overanalyze: “Don’t overanalyze it Trav. You’re the king of not overanalyzing, so don’t overanalyze it.”
But Travis sees that self-reflection as a critical part of his motivation: “But that’s how I find motivation. That’s how I create the beast, that’s how I flick the switch.”
Chiefs Prepare for Another Title Run with Kelce On Board
Kelce, who still has two years left on his contract and is set to earn nearly $20 million next season, was reportedly in discussions with family, friends, and Chiefs leadership – including girlfriend Taylor Swift – before making his decision.
His return is crucial for Kansas City’s hopes of reclaiming the Super Bowl title. Despite having one of his least productive seasons statistically, finishing with 823 receiving yards and only three touchdowns, his lowest totals since 2014, Kelce remains a vital part of the Chiefs’ offensive identity.
Looking ahead, Kelce‘s commitment to “play out the contract that I initially signed” gives the Chiefs and their fans renewed hope. With major NFL dates like free agency on March 12 and the NFL Draft from April 24-26, all eyes will be on how Kansas City builds around Kelce for another Super Bowl run.
And when the season kicks off on September 4, Chiefs Kingdom will be ready to see if their legendary tight end can lead them back to the top.
