The Miami Dolphins agreed to a one-year contract with quarterback Zach Wilson worth a fully guaranteed $6 million that could climb to as much as $10 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Wilson, 25, was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2021 NFL draft after posting prolific numbers in his final season at BYU. However, he struggled to find his footing with the New York Jets, finishing three seasons with the team with a 12-21 record as a starter. He threw 23 career touchdowns with 25 interceptions and a 57.0 completion percentage.
In April 2024, the Jets traded Wilson to the Denver Broncos for a swap of late-round draft picks. He didn’t appear in a game with the Broncos as the team turned to 2024 first-round pick Bo Nix as its full-time starter with Jarrett Stidham as his backup.
Last season, the Dolphins had Mike White and Skylar Thompson battle for the backup quarterback job and gave the role to the latter at the end of preseason. But when Tua Tagovailoa landed on injured reserve with a concussion early in the year, Thompson struggled as a starter.
Miami eventually signed Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad to be the backup for the remainder of the season. In six games without Tagovailoa in the lineup, the Dolphins went 2-4.
While finding a backup quarterback more capable of starting in Tagovailoa’s stead was a priority, expecting Wilson to be the solution is a tough sell.
