We saw Joel Embiid looking like his old self against the Memphis Grizzlies as he put up 35 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes. That was not enough to guide the Philadelphia 76ers to victory though as they lost 117-111 and are now 2-12 to start off the season. That is the worst record in the NBA at the moment.
On top of that, Paul George got injured again. He hyperextended his knee against the Grizzlies. He had suffered a similar injury in preseason and missed the first several games of the 2024-25 season as a result of it.
All things combined, one has to wonder whether the Sixers are a lost cause already and if it is time for them to end ‘The Process’ and start a different project altogether.
That could mean having to trade Joel Embiid. The 30-year-old might be one of the best in the world on his day but one cannot overlook his injury history. So far, there has been nothing that suggests that he can be the central piece of a Championship team.
If Embiid were to leave the Sixers, where would he end up? One bookmaker has placed the Miami Heat as the favorites.
When it comes to Embiid’s team next season, the Heat have the second-best odds. The 76ers are the only ones ahead of them as they are likely to retain the 30-year-old.
Embiid has been full of praise for Jimmy Butler lately. Could he end up reuniting with his former teammate at the Heat?
Who knows what the future holds for Embiid? One thing is for sure, if things do not work out for the Sixers this season, a lot of people will have questions to answer.
The 76ers went all out in the offseason, signing players like Paul George, Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond and several others.
Nothing seems to be working for them at the moment though. Their best players have been Jared McCain and Guerschon Yabusele.
