All 32 NFL teams will go into the new league year with vast changes to their roster.
The Denver Broncos made some big changes, mostly on the defensive side of the ball. They made some significant offensive changes, including letting their starting running back, Javonte Williams, leave via free agency.
On the first day of legal tampering, Wiliams was able to join a new team by agreeing to a one-year, $3 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys. This move puts Williams as the No. 1 running back with the Cowboys losing Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliot to free agency.
On Wednesday night, Mar. 12, NFL insider Ari Meirov revealed only $1 million of Williams’ $3 million deal is guaranteed. The specifics of how Williams can earn the entire portion of his contract with the Cowboys aren’t explained.
The nature of this contract is interesting as his full value might be achieved by playing a specific number of games or if it is performance-based. An example would be rushing for 1,000 yards, something the Cowboys have done since 2021.
Williams has been with the Broncos in all four years of his professional career. Last season, he rushed for 513 yards and four touchdowns on 139 carries. His rushing yards last season were the lowest in his years when he wasn’t injured. Williams was an efficient pass-catcher in the backfield as he caught 52 receptions for 346 yards.
The Cowboys got Williams for a cheap deal as they haven’t been a team to go and Pro-Bowl caliber players for a wealthy contract. Williams could easily be the top running back when the season starts, or he could be a backup if they decide to draft Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
