When former Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver Amari Cooper was acquired by the Buffalo Bills last season, in exchange for two draft choices from the Cleveland Browns, it was believed Cooper would prosper with quarterback Josh Allen.
Cooper was supposed to resurrect his career in Orchard Park and sign an extension with the Bills, who were wide receiver deficient after losing receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis.
The Bills could not keep the two receivers because of salary-cap reasons. Cooper could have signed a cap-friendly extension and had a long career with the Bills.
However, he failed to live up to expectations and is now a free agent pounding the pavement looking for a job.
NFL insider Matthew Berry of NBC Sports believes the former Pro Bowler is “done”.
Berry took to social media and disclosed what a former coach of Cooper confided in him.
“Amari is done. That’s not me talking,” Berry said. “That’s from an offensive coach of a former team of his I spoke to at the Combine.”
Cooper finished the 2024 season with only 20 receptions for 297 yards and two touchdowns. Despite shining in the playoffs with six receptions, his season hardly produced the statistics that qualify for an extension.
If Cooper is “done” as Berry suggests, he will finish his.career with 711 receptions for 10,033 yards and 64 touchdowns.
His once promising career might now be over. Wide receivers are still capable and productive at the age of 30. Many still have plenty left in the tank.
It is time to wonder what Cooper has left, if anything.
