With the NFL Draft looming, the Miami Dolphins have plenty of decisions on their plate. While they’ve played it cool in free agency so far, there’s a case for a few more bold moves before looking toward the rooks. The Dolphins have some cash to splash, and now’s the time to aim for a team that’s not just going through the motions but one that can actually make waves in 2025.
First up is the cornerback conundrum. Asante Samuel Jr., despite not being the flawless CB some teams hope for, brings enough grit and capability to shore up the defense until any rookie prospects are ready to fly solo.
With chatter around the Dolphins targeting a cornerback early in the draft, Samuel Jr. could be a smart insurance policy. At just 25, Samuel still has room to grow, and playing alongside someone like Jalen Ramsey could be just the boost he needs.
Plus, after spending most of last season sidelined not due to a serious injury, his market value might be a bit more palatable for Miami.
Switching gears to the offensive line, the Dolphins might be eyeing the wrong position. Instead of going all-in on a tackle, looking at Tyron Smith as a versatile option could be the savvy move.
Smith might have a history of injuries, but when he’s on the field, there’s no doubt about his prowess. If Patrick Paul or Austin Jackson needs support, Smith could fit the bill perfectly.
And with Terron Armstead’s future in question, having a veteran of Smith’s caliber around as a mentor is hardly a bad idea.
Safety concerns (literally) might be on the horizon, and while not everyone has pegged Justin Simmons as a fit for Miami, he could be exactly what the Dolphins need. With two safeties already in the mix, Simmons is still a tantalizing option to solidify the defense. Despite not getting picked up early in free agency last year or this year, bringing Simmons on board with a one-year deal allows Miami to be flexible in the draft and adds an experienced hand to their defensive backfield.
The Dolphins have an opportunity to lock down players who can elevate their game swiftly—if they seize it. Time to put the pieces together and take this team from contenders in conversation to contenders on the field.
