The Boston Red Sox started their 2025 season with a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers, due to some late-inning heroics.
The Red Sox were extremely busy this offseason, adding Alex Bregman and Walker Buehler in free agency. Their biggest move was trading four prospects to the Chicago White Sox for starting pitcher Garrett Crochet.
The player who stepped up on Opening Day was outfielder Wilyer Abreu. After battling a gastrointestinal virus for most of Spring Training, Abreu battled through and was able to get healthy enough to avoid going on the IL.
Abreu had two home runs in the game, including a 3-run shot that broke the tie game in the 9th inning. The Red Sox would close out the ninth inning en route to their first victory of 2025.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Abreu said “The two that I hit last year were for my grandmother. These two were for my twins.” He is referring to the first multi-homer game of his career, which also happened in Dallas last season.
Abreu had left the team to head to his home country of Venezuela due to his grandmother passing away, and in his first game back he hit two home runs against the Rangers.
Just two weeks ago, Abreu and his wife welcomed into the world twin boys. Clearly he received the “Dad strength” and showcased his power to kick off the season.
