Shocking Yankees Trade Prediction Sees New York Ship Away Starting Infielder

The New York Yankees have a massive hole at third base, and it needs to be addressed.

New York could look to upgrade this position immediately, but it’s unlikely it makes a move until much closer to the trade deadline. There’s a chance the rostered players can pick up the slack and hit well enough to keep the Yankees atop the American League East for another season.

But it would still be the best-case scenario for the Bronx Bombers to add a star third baseman in a trade this season.

FanSided’s Rucker Haringey predicted the Yankees would trade away their opening day starting third baseman, Oswaldo Cabrera, this season in order to acquire an upgrade at the position.

“One look at the Yankees’ depth chart makes it obvious that third base is the weakest spot amongst the team’s outfield players,” Haringey wrote. “Oswaldo Cabrera started at the hot corner on Opening Day, but he does not have the powerful bat required to profile as an above-average starter at the position.

“The problem with that plan is that the Yankees will need to offload Major League-ready talent in a deal to acquire such an upgrade. It’s easy to envision a scenario where Cabrera is a key piece of any team’s return in a deal for a superior third base option. That’s why his days in the Bronx are numbered.”

Trading away Cabrera doesn’t make much sense unless he’s the only way to acquire a star third baseman. In all likelihood, the Yankees could land a trade for an infielder without parting ways with their versatile 26-year-old infielder.
