The Dallas Cowboys have a backup plan in the event they do not have a chance at drafting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty in the first round. According to one NFL writer, the Cowboys could select Miami’s Damien Martinez on Day 2.
NFL writer Tony Pauline reported the ‘Boys are giving serious thought to drafting Martinez ” who Pauline considers “the most underrated running back in this year’s class.”
Pauline spoke very highly of Martinez, who transferred to Miami for his senior season after playing at Oregon State.
“He did position drills for a short time, which were run by the Denver Broncos. Martinez has an official-30 visit set up with the Dallas Cowboys, who, if they don’t come away with Ashton Jeanty in the first round, will target Martinez on Day 2.”
Martinez could be at play with the 44th pick or the 76th pick. Either way, he is targeted for day two.
The speedy Hurricanes star was clocked at 4.51 in the 40-yard dash at Miami’s Pro Day on Monday. He hits the hole with tremendous force and cannot be stopped in the open field. He proved that in the Pop Tarts Bowl against Iowa State when he was corralled at the line of scrimmage, broke several tackles and out ran the defense for a 75-yard touchdown.
The Cowboys ranked 20th in rushing yards per attempt last season and desperately need to upgrade the position. They have signed Javonte Williams from Denver in free agency, but he is not going to scare many people. Martinez could be a force to be reckoned with.
