The Pittsburgh Steelers got a handful of updates on Monday when head coach Mike Tomlin spoke at the NFL Owners meetings, hitting on a variety of topics from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to receiver DK Metcalf and running back Jaylen Warren.
For social media, though, he might as well have been mute.
That’s because Mark Kaboly, a Pittsburgh correspondent for “The Pat McAfee” stole the show by (seemingly) missing it.

The Steelers reporter went viral for looking asleep during Tomlin’s press conference.
Captured by Mike DeFabo (who survived The Athletic’s layoffs, while Kaboly did not), Kaboly is seen checking his phone from an awkward angle. Screenshots were far less forgiving than the clip, and Kaboly had to defend himself on his podcast.
“So there’s about a hundred thousand people around, it’s really a tiny area, like, inside one of those makeshift tents,” Kaboly said. “I get there early, pluck my rear end right next to [Tomlin], ’cause I don’t wanna, because there’s cameras all in front of him. And everybody’s there and, you have to understand, no matter where you sit at that point, somebody’s going to have a camera potentially on you. And it just happened to be DeFabo. Yeah, wink wink nod nod.
“I was not sleeping, it was just another one of the answers I’ve heard for, like, a hundred times. Right before that, you gotta understand, I said to somebody next to me…I said, ‘I gotta be very aware of my facial reactions when I’m this close to him. And there we go.”
More than anything else, Kaboly was merely a loser of Monday’s festivities, a victim of circumstance and perhaps a momentary lack of self awareness. In such a public-facing role, in front of the cameras, and with social media waiting to be set ablaze, he’ll be living this one down for a while
At least fans know what to expect for his next appearance on McAfee’s midday show.
“For the final time, let me break it down: I was videoing Tomlin from a bad angle, so I was looking to make sure I had him in the frame when he was talking.
“FAKE NEWS!”
