The New York Giants surprised the NFL when they released recently benched quarterback Daniel Jones on Friday. And now that he’s a free agent, all eyes turned to the Dallas Cowboys, who could use a quarterback now that Dak Prescott is out for the year, which led to head coach Mike McCarthy addressing the situation.
While New York has struggled mightily this year, much of that has been due to Jones’ poor play. Through 10 games, Jones managed to pick up just wins, racking 2,070 yards and eight touchdowns, while also rushing for 265 yards and two touchdowns. However, he also threw seven interceptions and lost four fumbles.
With Prescott out for the year due to a hamstring injury, Dallas has turned to Cooper Rush under center, and the results have not been good through two games. However, McCarthy didn’t show much interest when asked about Jones, saying the team would focus on the quarterbacks that they currently have on their roster.
“I’ve never really been in the business of looking at players based off the team they are released from, especially with the timing of the next game,” McCarthy said of Jones via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He was a prospect I really liked coming out, but we kind of have our head down right now and really focused on working with the guys we have here.”
There’s no doubt that in their current state, the Cowboys could stand to benefit from taking a flier on Jones. McCarthy doesn’t seem interested, though, as the team will be sticking with Rush and his backup, Trey Lance, as they look to play out the string on what’s been a disappointing 2024 campaign.
Where Jones will land next is as good as anyone’s guess, but for the long-term, landing with Dallas wouldn’t make much sense for either side. The Cowboys are already trying to develop a former first-round quarterback in Lance behind the scenes, and Prescott is obviously going to be the starter once he returns next year.
For now, McCarthy and the Cowboys will be focused on trying to get back on track when they take on the Washington Commanders in their Week 12 action.
