Novak Djokovic Reportedly Fined For Renovating His Mansion Without Permission

A recent report from a local news outlet revealed that Novak Djokovic has received two fines for getting work done on his mansion in Marbella without a permit.

For many years, Djokovic lived in Monte-Carlo. That might have partially been done for tax reasons, but many other players have also resided there because they enjoy the privacy and quiet that is guaranteed there.

A few years ago, Djokovic and his family built a mansion in Marbella, Spain, where they now spend a lot of time. The huge home includes nine bedrooms, an indoor swimming pool, a cinema, and a spa.

Despite how massive the mansion was from the start, Djokovic had some renovations done to it. However, those modifications to the mansion are what has gotten him into hot water with the Marbella City Council.

Marbella24horas reports that Djokovic’s work on it in 2022 was done without a license. So far, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has been fined €5,000 twice for not having a permit when renovating the mansion.

A January 2023 report carried out by technicians for the Marbella City Council found that Djokovic building three separate floors and adding a porch, bathroom, and shower violated the building’s height limit.

As pert the report, after the case was opened on February 6, 2024, Djokovic was ordered to resolve the issue within two months by providing the necessary documentation and demolishing part of the building to bring it into line with regulations.

Djokovic’s failure to take these measures led to the two coercive fines being implemented. More financial punishments are possible if the former ATP world No. 1 does not take the steps demanded by the City Council.

The second fine was imposed on February 13th. If the situation is not resolved in a way that satisfies the City Council, Djokovic could be hit with up to 12 fines over the coming months.

Djokovic’s slowness in dealing with the issue might simply stem from his wealth. The tennis legend has won over $186 million in prize money since the start of his career, meaning he probably barely notices €10,000 being lost in fines.

Nonetheless, he must still want to resolve the process. It is probably frustrating to have to deal with planning compliance instead of relaxing and enjoying living in the luxury mansion without any other thoughts.

Djokovic is currently preparing for the clay court swing, starting at next week’s 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters. The Serbian was recently warned that he might struggle during that part of the season.

However, his former coach Goran Ivanisevic does not doubt Djokovic. In a recent interview, he called the seven-time Wimbledon champion a genius, recounting his constant desire to improve each day when they worked together.

Djokovic’s most recent success was on clay. He won the Olympic gold medal that eluded him for many years at Roland Garros, beating Carlos Alcaraz in the gold medal match. It was one of the most emotional moments of his illustrious career.
