Young Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has the makings of a star, but veteran cornerback Darius Slay Jr. thinks that he has a few things in his game that he needs to fix.
On his Big Play Slay podcast, the brand new Steeler talked a bit about Porter, and seems more than willing to take him under his wing and teach him everything that he knows.
“I’m gonna make sure to get him right,” Slay said. “I told him, I watched him, and he does that cinch-in-step where he gets it. Now, he’s just gotta work on being better down the field. I watched his film, they were calling him for a lot of aggressiveness down there with the pass interference. I’m gonna tell him, ‘You beat him at the line. Just cut him off and now you’re the receiver. Go get the ball now.'”
Porter has been known to get pretty handsy when he gets down the field, and the referees were cracking down on him this past season. If he can clean up some of that stuff, Slay thinks that he has the makings of a star.
Slay knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a good corner, as he is former First Team All-Pro, has made it to six Pro Bowls, and is one of the best cornerbacks of this generation.
If Slay can be an effective mentor and help Porter refine his game, then it could make the Steelers defense even scarier than it already is.
