Right fielder Wilyer Abreu continues to be an unexpected hero for the Boston Red Sox this season.
On Sunday, the Red Sox hosted the St. Louis Cardinals in a doubleheader. The first game went to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Abreu entered the batter’s box with runners on first and second.
Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Fernandez threw a 95 mph four-seam fastball on his first pitch. Abreu then singled off the Green Monster at Fenway Park, sending Boston third baseman Alex Bregman home, sealing a 5-4 win for the Red Sox.
Boston improved to 5-4 following the win, while St. Louis fell to 4-4. Abreu went 1-for-1 at the plate.
This isn’t the first time Abreu has stepped up for the Red Sox this season. In a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Opening Day, he hit a key three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning.
Abreu seems to be building off his promising rookie season. In 2024, he finished sixth in American League Rookie of the Year voting and won a Gold Glove. Through his first nine games this season, he slashed .522/.645/1.000.
With Abreu proving the Red Sox can keep relying on him in close games, Boston should feel even more optimistic about the 25-year-old’s future.
