The Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t have a quarterback and we’re just two weeks away from the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft.
The Steelers are inching toward alternate scenarios than that of Aaron Rodgers being under center in 2025 as they continue to be held hostage by the former Packer and Jet.
And NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero believes the mess created by Rodgers for the Steelers is causing problems internally.
Star defender T.J. Watt has begun throwing contract hints as he enters the final year of the four-year, $112 million extension he signed in 2021. There are also rumors of a desire for Watt to be traded.
Pelissero thinks this all stems from the messy quarterback situation in Pittsburgh.
“I would say this for T.J. Watt. Couple of things. And this not with any knowledge or background, but one; he’s in a contract year. Plainly due for an upgrade. Doesn’t have it yet,” Pelissero said. “Two, I would fairly tell you, T.J. Watt is probably getting a little sick of waiting on the quarterback question as well.”
Pelissero spoke while hosting the Rich Eisen Show this week and indicated there’s more than one player who isn’t thrilled at the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh.
“Cam Heyward, who then proceeded to try and walk that back several times, when he said, ‘Hey, you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t. I don’t need to make more of a pitch than that.’ That opinion, from everything I’ve been told, is not solely to Cam Heyward,” Pelissero said. “There are other people certainly in the organization, in the locker room, who are just going, ‘What are we doing?’ We’re back for offseason workouts in ten days. We’re coming up on the draft. What is the plan? At a time when, if you’re a player, you feel like we can win.”
If something isn’t resolved one way or the other, the price tag for Watt could be higher than the $40 million preseason that’s anticipated per Steelers insider Mark Kaboly. Or he might just not be a Steeler anymore.
