The left tackle position has been a thorn in the Chiefs’ side since the departure of Orlando Brown Jr. Kingsley Suamataia has yet to establish himself as the starting tackle, and considering some believe he might have to move to guard, paired with the signing of Jaylon Moore, there is a need at the position.
While the team did sign Moore, a player who did very well after Trent Williams suffered an injury with the 49ers, his deal is only for two seasons.
Thus, the Chiefs are bringing in Ohio State star Josh Simmons on Friday for a visit, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and if the Chiefs have an opportunity to snag him, they have every reason to make that move.
The Chiefs have had Simmons mocked to them in the past, with NFL.com’s Charles Davis making his remarks about the potential pairing known.
“This pick almost feels too on the nose, but with the way Philadelphia attacked Kansas City’s O-line in the Super Bowl, scooping up Simmons in this scenario seems mandatory, even though the Ohio State/San Diego State product is coming off injury and the team already signed OT Jaylon Moore.” Wrote Davis. “Bottom line: K.C. must do everything it can to protect Patrick Mahomes. Oregon’s Josh Conerly Jr. could also be in play for the Chiefs here.”
There is little to no chance that Simmons is available at 31 unless something very bad happens. It would be a complete steal for the Chiefs if he does slip to the end of the first round, even with his injury question marks.
He is my number one tackle on the board, and there could be a chance that Simmons does not get past the 15th overall selection. There are several teams in need of a tackle that could select him, including New England, San Francisco, and the New York Jets.
If the Chiefs want Simmons, they will need to trade up, but quite frankly, they shouldn’t. As mentioned by Davis, Josh Conerly Jr may be in play while Kelvin Banks and Aireontay Ersery may be as well.
However, if the Chiefs are making inquiries into a player with All-Pro potential, where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and it wouldn’t be uncharacteristic for the Chiefs to move up for a critical need.
