Despite getting off to a .500 start, at 7-7 after salvaging the final contest in a four-game home series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox have proven to be one of the most productive offensive teams in MLB so far.

The Red Sox are averaging 5.07 runs per game, good enough for third in the American League and seventh of the 30 big league teams overall. The Seattle Mariners, on the other hand, have displayed one of the weakest hitting attacks in MLB, at just 3.38 runs per game over their first 13, fourth from the bottom in MLB.

At the same time, the Red Sox have been in dire need of catching help even before regular starter Connor Wong went down with a fractured pinkie finger his glove hand on Monday.

A new trade proposal by baseball reporter Conor Liguori of Athlon Sports addresses the needs of both teams by shipping struggling Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas — the team’s 2018 first round draft pick — to the Mariners for Seattle’s top catching prospect, 22-year-old Harry Ford.

Casas is off to a sluggish start for Boston, with only eight hits and three walks in 51 plate appearances heading into Friday’s slate of MLB games. Casas, whose primary attribute is his power, has managed only one homer so far.

The Red Sox, according to media reports, first offered Casas to Seattle at baseball’s winter meetings in December. The Red Sox wanted either Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo, two of the Mariners’ most prized young starting pitchers, but the Mariners rebuffed the overture.

However, in the new trade proposal Casas would bring a return of Woo plus, perhaps more importantly, Harry Ford — the Mariners No. 4 prospect and the top catcher in the Seattle system, one who is projected to break into MLB this year, according to MLB Pipeline.

Woo could slot into the Red Sox rotation until the return of Brayan Bello from injury, at which point the 25-year-old Woo still has minor league options remaining, meaning the Red Sox could stash him at Triple-A Worcester if necessary.

The Athlon trade pitch, however, would also require the Red Sox to part with their system’s No. 12 overall prospect Mikey Romero, a middle infielder who was Boston’s first-round pick in 2022, and is currently playing for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs.

Whether the Red Sox would feel comfortable parting both with Casas and a prospect of Romero’s stature remains a question, and could stand in the way of making the proposed deal a reality.
