Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has been fined $11,255 for unnecessary roughness against the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.
Late in the second quarter, Jones grabbed Bills running back Ty Johnson’s facemask on a rushing play up the middle of the field. Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis posted a video clip of the play on X.
The referees somehow didn’t see Jones’ facemask violation and he was not penalized for it. Officials have been very inconsistent with things like this for the last several years now. The Bills eventually settled for a 33-yard field goal to end the drive, giving them a 16-14 lead at halftime. They went on to win the game 30-21.
As for Jones, he clearly didn’t mean to grab Johnson’s facemask, but it happens. The NFL is cracking down hard on anything that involves a player’s head, so fair or not, guys are going to get fined for things like this. Fortunately for Jones, he just received a five-year, $158.75 million contract from Kansas City this past offseason.
Jones won’t likely get too hung up on this. He has played at his usual dominant level this season, leading a Chiefs defense that ranks third against the run and fifth overall. K.C. travels to Carolina to take on the Panthers on Sunday, looking to bounce back into the win column and remain the No. 1 seed in the AFC.
