Red Sox Linked to Trade with Cardinals on Non-Nolan Arenado Slugger

The Boston Red Sox have to feel confident about how they’ve played in the season’s early stages. It wasn’t a pretty start for the Red Sox, but considering the team is still 7-8, it could be much worse with how they’ve played.

The Red Sox are a much better squad than they’ve shown to be, but it’s still very early, and if things start to break their way, the season could turn.

As they look at the trade deadline, finding a catcher could be in their plans. The Red Sox are dealing with injuries behind the plate and below-average play.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed the idea of them trading for Willson Contreras, a catcher who’s proven throughout his career to be a very valuable option.

“Connor Wong had a breakout year at the plate in 2024, triple-slashing .280/.333/.425 and making appearances at first, second and DH to get as many ABs as possible. But he started out 2-for-23 with a pair of run-less, RBI-less singles before landing on the IL with a fractured pinkie. We’ll see how long he’s out, and how well he can bounce back when he does return.

“While Wong is out, Carlos Narváez will get as much work behind the plate as he can handle, but he had appeared in just six big-league games prior to this season, making the roster mostly due to his defense,” Miller wrote.

The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to sell at the deadline, meaning Contreras could be available.

The right-handed slugger is hitting .102 this season, but is coming off a .262 performance with 14 home runs a campaign ago. He isn’t elite by any means, but he has the tools to succeed in the American League East and would be much better than what the Red Sox currently have.
