“Don’t regret that at all,” Cowboys VP Stephen Jones stands by Trey Lance trade

Trey Lance, whom the Dallas Cowboys traded for a fourth-round pick in 2023, has played only one game with the Cowboys so far.

Stephen Jones, executive vice president of the Dallas Cowboys, stood firm on the Trey Lance trade. The Cowboys poured a huge chunk of money to acquire the former third-overall pick from the San Francisco 49ers.

The admission comes amid one of their worst starts in recent times. The Dallas Cowboys are 3-7 on the season, plummeting from three consecutive seasons with 12-5 records. They lost their starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, to an injury midway through, putting them into more trouble. Cooper Rush, who replaced Prescott hasn’t found any footing in the new position.

Trey Lance, whom they traded in from the 49ers, has played just one game in the two years. He was pushed into third-string ahead of the season. The Cowboys splashed some major money, including a $5.3 million guaranteed payout for the first-round pick from 2021. They declined the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, meaning he would be a free agent by March.

Stephen Jones, Jerry Jones’ son, defended management’s decision to take Lance. Jones noted that he would do it all over again if he could. He also admitted Dak Prescott’s uncertainty was one of the key reasons that spurred the decision a year ago while making an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Friday.

[Lance] is a top-tier pick, a guy we had at the top. As you know, Dak was coming up for a contract, and we wanted to take a look at a good, young talent and didn’t feel like we could get anything from a quality standpoint like we could get with Trey. As it turns out, we ended up signing Dak long-term. So, obviously that puts a little less need in terms of having to rush to do something with Trey. Matter of fact, it makes it hard because Trey, I’m sure, is wanting to see what’s out there now that we have committed to Dak long-term. But I don’t regret that at all.

Stephen Jones stated

Jerry Jones stated that Cooper Rush will remain the starting quarterback for the Cowboys (3-7) because he provides the best chance to win. As a result, Trey Lance will likely continue to sit and may leave the team without ever starting a regular-season game. At the end of the day, the Cowboys will have given up a fourth-round pick and a hefty sum of money for nothing.

Trey Lance is ready to gear up when the opportunity presents itself

The Dallas Cowboys wouldn’t want to finish the season with just three wins. Unless they want to tank badly and finish in the Top Five for the next year’s draft. Cooper Rush who had a decent 5-1 as a starter has climbed down to 5-3 after successive losses. The Cowboys could potentially look at a scenario where they need to bring in Trey Lance.

Lance, 24, earlier sent a clear message to the organization about what he proposed. He admitted that he has been on the sidelines learning for a long time and feels prepared for any opportunity.

Last year was a whole different story. Having gone through the whole offseason program and this season up to this point, I feel prepared if that opportunity does happen at some point.

Trey Lance added

The Cowboys head to the Northeast Stadium in Landover, Maryland this week to play the Washington Commanders. Commanders, who started the season on a positive note, sustained a couple of hard losses in the last weeks. The Cowboys will have a huge challenge if they want to overcome the division rivals keen on winning.
