The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season in Week 11 at the Buffalo Bills, and for a point in time, it looked like they were going to lose again in Week 12, this time at the hands of the Carolina Panthers. However, they managed to prevail late, as they picked up a 30-27 victory when all was said and done.
Kansas City controlled the action throughout this one, but Carolina hung with them all day long, and eventually tied the game at 27 late in the fourth quarter. They left too much time on the clock, though, as Patrick Mahomes drove down the field and set up Spencer Shrader for a 31-yard game-winning field goal as time expired.
It was pretty shocking to see the Panthers, who have just three wins on the year, play the Chiefs so tough in this one, and it’s clear that there was a lot of respect between the two squads. After their 10th win of the year, Kansas City sent a heartfelt six-word message to Carolina on X, formerly Twitter.
The team captioned a post on their official X account, “Thanks for hosting, Panthers. Good game!” which was alongside of a video of Mahomes greeting several Panthers players , including quarterback Bryce Young.
Fresh off their first loss of the season, the expectation was that the Chiefs would pummel the hapless Panthers to get back on track. And yet, they nearly fell in this potential trap game, as Young and the rest of his squad put up quite a fight against the reigning Super Bowl champions.
While some of these struggling teams don’t put up a great fight against top teams later in the season, the Panthers went out and gave it their all. As competitors themselves, the Chiefs respected that, and made sure to let their opponent know they were worthy, even as they labor through the 2024 campaign.
With the win, Kansas City holds onto the No. 1 seed in the AFC heading into Week 13. They will have to turn the page quickly, though, because they have a short week coming up, as their next game will take place against the Las Vegas Raiders on Black Friday.
