As the Dallas Cowboys prepare to welcome in their rookie additions with the NFL Draft this week, they are continuing to do work on outside additions in the free agent and trade markets.
For one, veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore met with the Cowboys on Tuesday, as he enters free agency once again looking for a cornerback-needy team to acquire his services. With Dallas not expecting injured Trevon Diggs back for the start of the season and losing Jourdan Lewis to the Jaguars in free agency, the need is desperate at the position.
“We’re always looking to make our roster better,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “It doesn’t always mean that if they’re in the building that there’s a deal in the works. In general, our player acquisition is year-round.”
Naturally, the Cowboys are not expected to sign Gilmore in the immediate future, according to a team source. However, owner and general manager Jerry Jones indicated that the trade market could see some action with the team as soon as before the draft.
“We’re looking at two things that could happen before or after the draft,” Jones said. “Two pretty substantive trades, been working on today.”
The Cowboys have already been on the receiving end of three trades this offseason, as they acquired linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, cornerback Kaiir Elam in a deal with the Buffalo Bills and backup quarterback Joe Milton III in an exchange with the New England Patriots.
Veteran options at positions of need have been openly discussed on the trade market, such as veteran cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey of the Miami Dolphins and Jaire Alexander of the Green Bay Packers. While the Cowboys would most likely have to take on a decently sized contract with a veteran option, they have the cap space freedom to do so this offseason.
Heading into draft weekend, the Cowboys are hoping to be in a position to take the best player available in the first round rather than reach for a position of need. Grabbing proven impact players at those positions of need beforehand could alleviate some of that pressure when they are on the clock on Thursday night.
