The Boston Red Sox are severely lacking production at the first base position to start the season.
Triston Casas is Boston’s current first baseman, but his 2025 has been a struggle to say the least. Entering play on Tuesday, Casas has a meager .158 batting average and only one home run.
Another issue the Red Sox have is there is currently no spot for MLB’s No. 1 prospect (via Baseball Prospectus) Roman Anthony to join the major league roster. Currently, all outfield spots are taken by the following: Wilyer Abreu, Ceddane Rafaela, and Jarren Duran.
These aforementioned issues have caused some to speculate moving Anthony to first base in order to get his bat into Boston’s lineup. Anthony’s manager for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, Chad Tracy, was very adamant about his stance on the matter.
“We are not putting Roman at first base” Tracy said, which was posted on X by Masslive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day.
Realistically, it does not make sense to move a player that many feel to be a perennial All-Star to a position he has never played professionally in order to get him in the majors; even if the player is demolishing pitchers left and right in the minors.
What would seem more plausible would be if Boston was to move one of their starting outfielders in a trade to acquire an elite reliever.
Currently, both Aroldis Chapman and Justin Slaten have logged multiple saves already this season. If Boston could add the likes of a Josh Hader or Ryan Helsley, that could give them a dominant bullpen en route to their first potential playoff birth since 2021.
