The New York Yankees will be looking for pitching help at the trade deadline as they look to make a push for the World Series.
While they will wait for internal improvements in the rotation, the bullpen will require them to go out and bring in external relievers from teams who are selling at the deadline.
Brendan Smith of FanSided believes the Yankees could target two-time All-Star closer David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“David Bednar had been a popular trade rumor for a couple years as well, but his recent downfall has all but negated his value,” wrote Smith. “The good news is, Bednar still lives in the upper 90s with his fastball. The bad news? Batters clubbed his fastball to the tune of a .363 xwOBA, hitting six home runs against it last season.”
Bednar would certainly be an interesting choice for the Yankees as he has struggled more often than not. He may have turned over a new leaf after his demotion to Triple-A, but Pirates fans know firsthand his success can be very short lived.
Smith mentions Bednar could be acquired for “low-level prospects” due to Bednar’s struggles. However, he fails to take into account that Bednar is under control through next season. He wouldn’t be a rental like Ryan Helsley, and even Helsley is projected to bring in a strong package.
The Pirates would be looking for high-level prospects or young players in the major leagues in exchange for Bednar.
