The Dallas Cowboys wasted no time in making waves during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, as they made what many believe to be a reach by selecting guard Tyler Booker at No. 12 overall.
Most fans hoped that the organization would target a skill-position player, like Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan or Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, yet that didn’t happen. Superstar defender Micah Parsons isn’t happy, though it’s not exactly breaking news that the Cowboys’ front office made a poor decision.
In an attempt to rebuild optimism among the fan base, Stephen Jones unfortunately did the exact opposite with new comments on Friday.
Cowboys’ Stephen Jones Delivers Terrible News to Dallas Fans During NFL Draft
To those who want Dallas to find a running back of the future, EVP Stephen Jones has some bad news.
“I like what we did in free agency,” Jones said. “We don’t really feel like we have to pick a position anywhere. We don’t feel the need to have to reach.”
Regarding wide receiver, Jones had a similarly disappointing sentiment, saying that the organization had players who they felt like could develop into strong No. 2 wideouts alongside All-Pro CeeDee Lamb. Considering how badly the Cowboys struggled with skill-position players, these comments are particularly embarrassing.
Even the most optimistic of prognosticators can recognize that Jones is being obtuse here. Dallas does not, in fact, have quality secondary options at receiver. On the contrary, the offense has suffered for years because of the Jones family’s inability to properly evaluate the position.
If Stephen and Jerry Jones actually believe that they don’t need upgrades and this isn’t just “coach-speak” then fans should be infuriated. Lamb is a superstar, but he needs help. Dak Prescott is a quality quarterback, yet not someone capable of elevating poor players, and that’s exactly what the Cowboys are asking him to do.
With nine picks left, Dallas has the ammo to fix the problem the front office has created. Based on these comments though, it sounds like the Jones’ are too delusional to actually address a problem that everyone can see exists.
