Patrick Mahomes stepped into the offseason with more than just a hunger to return to the Super Bowl- he eventually brought a whole new look with him. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback showed up courtside at a Texas Tech basketball game sporting a noticeably shorter haircut, leaving fans buzzing on social media. For someone known for his signature curls as much as his cannon of an arm, the change didn’t go unnoticed.
Weeks after the Chiefs’ disappointing Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Mahomes finally opened up about the cut. During a press conference, he explained that the change had nothing to do with the game’s outcome. In fact, the decision had been in the works for some time.
“I’ve wanted to do it for a while but it was kind of one of those superstitions,” Mahomes said, per Fox4 Kansas City sports director Rob Collins. “I kept winning the Super Bowl, which is a good thing, but I didn’t want to cut the hair while I was doing it.”
Haircut After The Hype
Mahomes admitted he had already made up his mind, win or lose. “I had told everybody during the season that win or lose, if we win three in a row, or we lose, I’m getting the hair cut,” he said. The Chiefs didn’t hit the elusive three-peat, but Mahomes stuck to his word. And while the fresh look turned heads, it wasn’t a snap decision.
Barber DeJuan Bonds, who’s been cutting Mahomes’ hair for years, shared with Us Weekly that the initial plan was to go much shorter. “I was like, ‘No, no, no. We’re not just going to cut it all off,’” Bonds recalled. Instead, they took a more measured approach. “We’re actually going to collab on this and go a little bit at a time… We kind of came to a common ground like, ‘OK, this is the cut, this is the cut, this is the length.’”
Now, with a lighter head and eyes on another title run, Mahomes seems refreshed and ready. He even joked that he “can’t believe” his teammates let him keep the old style for so long. As the Chiefs gear up for another season, starting with first-round pick Josh Simmons from Ohio State joining the offensive line, all eyes will be on how the new look plays out, on and off the field.
