The final part of the Bradley Chubb trade is complete: Full rundown of the deal

All of the different parts of the Bradley Chub trade between the Dolphins and Broncos are complete. Here’s the final haul.

Matt Warren joined SB Nation in 2009 as a contractor and 2022 as a full-time member of the NFL team. He specializes in math posts such as salary cap analysis and playoff picture, but whenever a fun NFL story crosses his desk, he can’t help but dive in.

It seems like forever ago that the Denver Broncos shipped former fifth overall pick Bradley Chubb to the Miami Dolphins. Way back in November 2022, they made the move but the final piece of the picture held all the way to the 2025 NFL Draft. That brings up to this weekend when the trade is finally finished.

Original terms of the Bradley Chubb trade

Broncos receive: 2023 first-round pick (from San Francisco), 2024 fourth-round pick, RB Chase Edmonds
Dolphins receive: Bradley Chubb, 2025 fifth-round pick

What did the Broncos do with the picks from the Bradley Chubb trade?

The first-round pick from San Francisco ended up being the 29th overall selection after the 49ers went to the NFC Championship Game. That pick became the centerpiece of the trade with the New Orleans Saints to acquire the rights to head coach Sean Payton; pick 29 plus a 2024 second-round pick for a 2024 third-round pick and the coach.

The 2024 fourth-round pick slotted in at 121 overall. Denver also traded that pick, using it as part of the package to move up and select Troy Franklin to pair with his college QB, Bo Nix.

How has Sean Payton performed for the Broncos?

The biggest part of the Bradley Chubb trade was the first-round pick that was eventually used to trade for Payton. In Payton’s first season in 2023, the Broncos won eight games for the first time since 2016. In 2024, they topped that, winning 10 games and making the postseason despite a huge dead cap hit from Russell Wilson. The offense bottomed out in 2022 scoring just 287 points but that was up to 425 in 2024. Payton has certainly put his stamp on the team and turned around their fortunes, at least so far.

How was Chase Edmonds’ performance for the Broncos after being traded by Miami?

Edmunds played just five games in a Broncos uniform after being traded midseason, carrying the ball 26 times for 125 yards. He caught six passes for 61 yards, too, before a high ankle sprain in November landed him on injured reserve. He was released after the season, saving the Broncos $6 million. He spent 2023 and 2024 on league-minimum one-year deals with Tampa Bay but remains unsigned this offseason.

How has Troy Franklin performed on the Broncos so far?

After the Broncos used a pick from the Bradley Chubb trade to move up for Franklin, he had a solid rookie season playing alongside a rookie quarterback. Franklin played 16 games, catching 28 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns on 37% of the offensive snaps.

The Broncos made the playoffs, too, and he caught two passes for 54 yards and a touchdown in that game.

What did the Dolphins do with the picks from the Bradley Chubb trade?

In addition to Chubb, the Dolphins received a 2025 fifth-round selection. That slots in at pick 155 overall. Miami used it to select Maryland safety Dante Trader, Jr.

How has Bradley Chubb played since being traded from Broncos to Dolphins?

Chubb took the back half of the 2022 to acclimate in Miami, playing 59% of the defensive snaps of the games in which he was with the Dolphins instead of his normal workload. In 2023, though, he was back above 80%.

Unfortunately for Chubb, he tore his ACL in Week 17 of the 2023 season and missed the entire 2024 campaign as a result.

He’s played in 24 games for Miami with 13.5 sacks, 86 tackles, seven forced fumbles, and two recoveries. Solid numbers, but not really first-round pick numbers.

Miami has also paid him $87 million since 2022, leading to the two sides agreeing to a pay cut for the 2025 season.

Who won the Bradley Chubb trade between the Broncos and Dolphins?

Even discounting Chubb’s injury, his performance in Miami has been underwhelming of both the picks traded for him and the money the Broncos saved by moving him. Factor in the success the Broncos have had with Sean Payton, and it’s a pretty clear Denver win here.
