The Miami Dolphins picked former Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft with the No. 231 overall selection.
Ewers began his collegiate career at Ohio State as one of the top high school recruits in the country, but transferred after one season and spent the next three years as the Longhorns’ starter. In 36 games with Texas, Ewers recorded over 9,000 passing yards with 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
While he’s not a physically imposing quarterback at 6’2, 214 pounds, his arm talent made him a coveted player in the collegiate ranks and could make him a worthwhile developmental talent in Miami.
The Dolphins previously spent three seasons trying to build 2022 seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson into a capable backup. But after he struggled to do much in the lineup in 2024, the team moved on and signed former Jets and Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson to be the team’s backup in 2025.
It’s unlikely that Ewers will see the field early in his career with the Dolphins. But if he shows enough promise after a year in the team’s offensive system, Ewers could potentially supplant Wilson as the team’s much cheaper backup in 2026 and beyond.
