The Pittsburgh Steelers scouting department did furiously intense work leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft.

It’s also largely anonymous work, with scouts not just watching YouTube highlights of college players, but actually trudging around the country and then making judgements on prospects that can mean real jobs or real unemployment.

And not just for the prospects.

That goes for the scouts, too.

It takes several departments working over several months – and even years – to build the team’s internal draft board and prioritize players and positions over others.

It’s a complex machine for every NFL team, including the Steelers.

And now an iconic Pittsburgh quarterback thinks he just might want in.

On his “Footbahlin” podcast, two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger revealed he’d like to help the Steelers in the scouting department, and thinks his experience and insight could be a valuable asset to the organization.

“I would love to go to a game and watch it, like a live game,” Roethlisberger said. “Like, I would just watch that player. Look at him when he comes off the field. Does he sit on the bench and pout? Does he go sit down, is he throwing his hands up and blaming other people, or is he like, ‘My bad?”

That, of course, is part of the job. And there is no doubt given “Big Ben’s” resume as a player – he performed at a high level as a 2004 first-round pick who won 2 Super Bowls and being judged as a Pro Bowler six times over the course of a notable 15-year career.

But one Steelers insider finds the idea to be a worrying one.

“Ben’s 43, out of football since 2021, and this ‘new career’ is just now occurring to him?” the source tells AllSteelers.com. “He wants to go to a game and watch one player’?”

“I’m not sure Ben understands what a grind this really is.”

Roethlisberger – who in his pre-draft notes tabbed Ohio State’s Will Howard as “a winner,” and indeed the Steelers ended up drafting the QB Howard in Round 6 – can certainly help out here as a hobbyist.

But we’re betting he doesn’t really want to be a full-time, low-paid, high-grind scout.
