CONFIRMED Elina Svitolina broke down in tears while announcing and revealing the unfortunate reason her husband, Gael Monfils, was forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open, leaving many fans heartbroken. “We hope everyone can understand and support us, because this is something no one wants…”

In an announcement that shocked tennis fans, Elina Svitolina, wife of French tennis player Gael Monfils, broke down in tears upon confirming that her husband had to withdraw from the Mutua Madrid Open due to health issues. This withdrawal allowed Russian Andrey Rublev to advance directly to the third round, although the news left many fans saddened at not being able to see the charismatic Monfils in action.

Svitolina, visibly emotional, explained the situation in a social media post: “Unfortunately, Gael was unable to continue in the tournament due to an illness that has affected him in recent days. This is a very difficult decision for him, because he loves playing in Madrid and has always felt the affection of the fans here.” The Ukrainian tennis player, who also competes on the WTA tour, added: “We hope everyone can understand and support us, because this is something no one wants. Thank you for your love and understanding.”

Monfils, known for his explosive style of play and connection with the crowd, was scheduled to face Rublev in the second round of the tournament. However, his health prevented him from taking the court, and the Russian advanced without having to play the match. Rublev, who will now face Tallon Griekspoor in the next round, expressed his sadness over the situation: “It’s a shame Gael can’t be here. I wish him a speedy recovery, because he’s a great competitor and a great person.”

Monfils’ absence from the Mutua Madrid Open has generated a wave of support on social media, with thousands of fans sending well wishes to both him and Svitolina. The Frenchman, ranked 38th in the ATP rankings, had been performing well on clay this season, making his withdrawal even more regrettable for tennis fans.

For her part, Svitolina is also competing in the women’s tournament at the Madrid Open, where she’s looking to advance to the final rounds. The pair, one of the most beloved in the tennis world, have faced difficult times before, but they have always stood out for their resilience and mutual support. Fans hope Monfils can recover soon and return to the court with his characteristic enthusiasm.
