Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson is already noticing the difference with Brian Schottenheimer steering the ship in 2025.
The Dallas Cowboys have a relatively fresh face taking charge of the ship with Brian Schottenheimer, the new head coach/offensive play-caller, after taking over from Mike McCarthy.
From the outset, we have heard from players, the coaches Schotty has hired, and everyone in between about his love not only for the game of football but also for his players.
With relationships being a big Schottenheimer thing and a key part of building this new culture at The Star, this offseason, he’s walked the walk after talking the talk in his introductory press conference, but this isn’t all entirely new.
Schottenheimer was the offensive coordinator under McCarthy last season, and for tight end Jake Ferguson, there’s been a noticeable difference between Schotty last year and the man who’s steering this ship now.
“Only word I can think of is aura,” Ferguson said with a 1-word evaluation. “The aura he’s bringing, I feel it’s a little bit different and the first two days of OTAs, he made sure our team meeting was in the locker room and he made sure that was important to us and moving forward from that, to me it seems very easy to buy-in and continue to compete every day.”

Buying into what the coach is selling is the first important piece of the franchise puzzle, and from Ferguson’s vantage point, Schottenheimer is hitting all the right notes.
Granted, it is only the beginning of the Schottenheimer era, and it is off to a good start, but we will get a good indication of how this is traveling when training camp begins and then the real stuff in Week 1.
But Schotty’s messaging has remained the same throughout the offseason. It’s about relationships and love for one another, and as we know, playing for your coach in a much deeper way than usual can have a positive effect.
And for Ferguson, it’s easy to buy what Schottenheimer’s selling in 2025.
