Star receiver’s shift in role fuels Dolphins’ resurgence

The Miami Dolphins are grooving like it’s early 2023 all over again, with defenses across the NFL struggling to crack the code on how to stop them. The secret sauce?

A diversified approach to offense, no longer relying on one-man show strategies. Tyreek Hill, a phenomenal talent no doubt, used to be at the heart of Miami’s ambitions to hit the elusive 2,000 receiving yards landmark, but that singular focus often left other playmakers out in the cold and limited Mike McDaniel’s play-calling creativity.

Last season, when opponents figured out how to minimize Hill’s impact, the Dolphins’ insistence on forcing him the ball led to stalled drives and frustrating outcomes. Fast forward to now, and McDaniel is flipping the script, letting defensive setups guide his offensive choices. Tua Tagovailoa is spreading the wealth, connecting with Jaylen Waddle more frequently, peppering running backs with outlet passes, and featuring Jonnu Smith, who’s putting together what could be a career-best season.

This revamped offense is clicking because McDaniel and Tagovailoa have dropped the rigid patterns of the past, embracing flexibility instead. For McDaniel, sticking with this adaptable play-calling approach is key.

It means keeping a balanced attack that doesn’t abandon the run game or fall into complex mind games with rival coaches. It’s about smart, efficient football—methods that move the chains and make defenses alter their plans, opening up opportunities for Hill and others to exploit.

Hill will naturally get his chances. As defensive adjustments unfold, his speed and skill will still shine through.

But the priority right now is racking up wins, ensuring a playoff berth is within reach. If the Dolphins can maintain this balanced, unpredictable assault, their postseason prospects look promising.
