The ‘bond’ between Rafael Nadal and the red clay has certainly represented one of the most incredible phenomena in the history of sport. The Spanish legend has been exceptional on all surfaces during his long career, but there is no doubt that he has carved his legacy especially on clay where he has collected simply unrepeatable numbers.
It is difficult for anyone to come close to his record of 14 triumphs at Roland Garros, despite having to face legends such as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in his own era and having to overcome a high number of injuries that have affected him.
The former world number 1 will receive a very special tribute in Paris during this year’s edition, a moment that will remain forever etched in the memory of all fans. The 22-time Grand Slam champion had not wanted to receive tributes in the last edition of the French Open because he did not rule out playing the tournament again this year, but as time went on he agreed that it would not make sense to extend his career and that he was ready for a new chapter in his life.
Rafa is very happy right now, spending his time with his family (his wife Xisca is expecting their second child) and doesn’t miss professional tennis.
Rafa has several clay court records
Nadal’s legendary aura continue to remain intact, especially through the anecdotes of his former rivals.
On the latest edition of the ‘Nothing Major’ podcast, former American ace Steve Johnson highlighted a crazy statistic from Rafa on red clay: “It is mind blowing to me that he has 12 more titles on clay courts than he has losses in his career.”
Steve also added: “He has 63 clay court titles and 51 losses on clay courts throughout his entire career. He has more titles than losses. That is ridiculous.”
Nadal’s last public appearance was during the 25th edition of the ‘Laureus Awards’ in Madrid, where he received a prestigious award for his career.
