The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to announce they’re bringing back their original all-gold helmets that the team wore from 1933-62 as part of their NFL Color Rush games next season.

Two players we expect to see in those helmets are wideouts D.K. Metcalf and George Pickens.

After much speculation that Pickens might be traded away before or during the NFL Draft – with the Dallas Cowboys on the call list – he remains on the roster. The former Georgia Bulldog will enter the final season of his rookie deal in 2025 as Metcalf begins his career with the Steelers and a four-year, $132 million extension.

All of the speculation of Pickens’ future continued even after Steelers general manager Omar Khan said before the draft that Pickens remains in their plans.

“I mean, we’re glad we have George and DK here,” Khan said. “I think they’re gonna be exciting for everyone to watch.”

But Khan also left the door open during the draft, hinting at a move back up into the second round.

“We’ll see how things shake out,” Khan said. “I’ll say this, we gave up a second for DK, and I’m so excited that we did that. Having him here is great. Obviously, when you get to the draft, you get excited about a lot of players, and you wish you had 50 picks right now. There are a lot of good players out there. You know, we’ll see how this shakes out.”

It sounds like the Steelers don’t know quite yet whether or not Pickens is part of their plans beyond 2025, but multiple reports have indicated that the relationship between Pickens and the team is fractured.

If Khan and the team think he’s on his way out the door via free agency after 2025 anyway, it would do them well to see what they could get via trade vs. what they think they’d get in a compensatory pick.
