Rafael Nadal opened up about the emotions behind his decision to retire. The 22-time Major winner revealed his inner struggle while trying to choose the right moment to walk away from the sport that defined his life.
Speaking candidly, the 14-time Roland Garros winner admitted that the retirement was not yet decided during last year’s Roland Garros despite the physical toll and uncertainty. Ultimately, Nadal says he is “completely at peace” with the decision to end his career.
Known for his relentless intensity and unmatched fighting spirit, Rafa’s decision to retire was not taken lightly. However, it was made with clarity. His words reflect a man who left everything on the court and walks away fulfilled and ready for the next chapters of his life.
The Spaniard ended his incredible career at last year’s Davis Cup Finals following numerous setbacks with injuries. The veteran gave everything to prolong his career and end it on his terms. However, he could not endure more pain, leaving his beloved sport and turning the page.
Rafa’s final push came in the first half of 2022 when he conquered the Australian Open and Roland Garros. He experienced an abdominal injury at Wimbledon and retired ahead of the semi-final. It marked his final deep run at Majors!

Nadal finished the season ranked 2nd behind Carlos Alcaraz but without form or momentum. He suffered a severe left hip injury at the 2023 Australian Open and missed the rest of the season. Rafa worked hard in the second part of the year and made a return in Brisbane at the beginning of 2024.
Despite trying everything to find his old form, Nadal lacked results, even on his beloved clay. The 14-time champion fell to Alexander Zverev in the first round at Roland Garros and lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the Olympic Games.

The Spaniard decided to end his career at the Davis Cup Finals, competing for his country for the last time and sailing into retirement as one of the most accomplished players ever.
“I had not made my retirement decision by last year’s Roland Garros. It was a difficult time emotionally as I tried to manage everything and give all the love and support back to the fans. At the same time, you have to find a way to isolate yourself emotionally so the moment does not carry you away.
I wanted to make the right move around my retirement. I would have hated being home and thinking I should be on the court instead. I’m completely at peace with my decision today, knowing I gave everything I had until the end,” Rafael Nadal said.
