Rafael Devers is in just his second season of a massive 10-year, $313.5 million dollar contract and the vibes in Boston aren’t too great.
Heading into 2025, the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal to play third base, which is Devers’ primary position. As a result, Devers was moved to DH, but he wasn’t happy with it and even resisted.
After having internal discussions with the team, Devers accepted the position change and dropped his glove for the foreseeable future.

Now, the team is without first baseman Triston Casas for the rest of 2025 after he suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee and Boston asked Devers to take his place, a position he’s never played.
“I know I’m a ballplayer, but at the same time, they can’t expect me to play every single position out there. In spring training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove. I wasn’t going to play another position other than DH. Right now, I don’t think it would be an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position.”
He was a part of Boston’s 2018 World Series run and remains to be an intricate piece for the team currently and moving forward. However, there are teams that could be monitoring this situation with hopes to acquire the two-time Silver Slugger.
One team particularly comes to mind, and that is the New York Yankees. They came into the season with third base being a concern, Devers would change that.
Trades between rivals like these franchises are not common, in fact since 1969, they have made a total of 9 trades with each other. Four of them have been made since 2021, suggesting that they could be more willing to work together.
With a disgruntled offensive superstar, who might have lost his trust with the organization, there’s no telling what Boston might do.
Will the Red Sox look for other defensive options for their infield, or will a team like the Yankees swoop in on an opportunity to add one of baseball’s best hitters.
