The San Francisco 49ers’ disappointing season continued on Sunday afternoon as they were blasted by the Green Bay Packers 38-10 at Lambeau Field for their second straight loss.
It didn’t help that quarterback Brock Purdy was out with a shoulder injury, which he suffered in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks. Backup Brandon Allen filled in for Purdy, but the 49ers couldn’t get much going on offense, racking up only 241 total yards, including just 44 on the ground with a healthy Christian McCaffrey.
After the embarrassing loss, 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. declined to speak with the media. The former first-team All-Pro only recorded one catch for 21 yards and was clearly frustrated with his team’s performance.
This decision by Samuel came with a lot of backlash from NFL fans. The former South Carolina star had earned the honor of being a captain for the team, sending a poor message to his teammates with his decision. Fans took to social media to leave their thoughts on the matter.
“Pretty weak for someone who wears the C on his chest,” one fan wrote.
“Not surprising, shows a lack of accountability,” added another.
“Captain Deebo fights with teammates, doesn’t show up for media and playing like trash. Give that C patch to Jennings,” said a third.
“He needs to go I’m done with him,” chimed in a fourth.
“Getting paid $24 million a year and he’s a captain, not a good look,” added a fifth.
“This is a really bad look Dude is a captain. Having horrible games or stretches happens to the best – leaders own it and face the firing squads,” commented a sixth.
This year, Samuel hasn’t necessarily lived up to his three-year, $71.5M contract he signed over the 2022 offseason. The receiver has amassed 34 catches for 511 yards and only one touchdown. However, the 49ers do have the option of letting him go after 2024. But if they keep him around, he will be locked up through 2027.
San Francisco has now fallen to 5-6 on the season and is on the outside looking in at the NFL playoffs. It has another tough challenge ahead as it takes on the 9-2 Buffalo Bills in Week 13.
