In February, former Georgia Bulldogs and Pittsburgh Steelers running back Daijun Edwards signed a two-year deal to play for the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes through the 2027 CFL season.

On May 13, he was cut after just two days of training camp.

Multiple reports indicate he showed up to camp overweight and out of shape and failed to demonstrate professionalism with Alouettes management regarding the situation.

Eric Leblanc with RDS reported that team management had joked internally about accidentally signing the wrong Daijun Edwards because there’s no way the one they signed ever played football.

Leblanc also noted that Edwards’ conditioning, or lack thereof, stood out among all the other training camp attendees.

Edwards signed with the Steelers after going undrafted out of Georgia after posting more than 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns with the Bulldogs. He notched seven carries for 37 yards and one touchdown with Pittsburgh in the 2024 preseason and had some bright moments.

But it wasn’t enough for him to make the final 53-man roster as he was cut on August 26.

The 24-year-old was expected to be a key part of the Alouettes offense in 2025 for a team that went 12-5-1 during the 2024 CFL season before losing in the CFL division final. Montreal won the Grey Cup (CFL championship) in 2023.

Edwards’ NFL Combine numbers had him listed at 5-9, 207 pounds back in 2024. There were no reports of what his weight was when Montreal cut him.
