Hernández played four innings in right field on Saturday. On track for potential activation on Monday.
LOS ANGELES — Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández played four innings in right field for the Low-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, beginning a minor league rehab assignment against Inland Empire.
Hernández was 0-for-1 at the plate with two walks and a strikeout in his first game action since May 5.
After a first-inning walk, Hernández went first to third on a single to right field, then later scored easily on a wild pitch that caromed to the visitors dugout. Hernández also walked in the second inning.
In the fourth inning, Hernández got to face another major league pitcher, but struck out against a rehabbing Robert Stephenson.
The plan, if all goes well, is for Hernández to be activated on Monday, when the Dodgers open a series against the Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium. Whether he plays a second game on Sunday for the Quakes remains to be seen.
“Tomorrow is a day game, if he does play, he’ll probably be DH, is my guess,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Saturday afternoon. “He might choose not to play tomorrow.”
While he hadn’t played in any rehab games before Saturday, Hernández has been facing live batting practice before games in each of the Dodgers’ last three series, including facing Emmet Sheehan twice and facing prospect Maddux Bruns this week.
Hernández, and fellow injured regular Tommy Edman have also been running and doing pregame drills for more than a week.
Hernández has been sidelined since May 6 with a left groin strain. Sunday will mark his 12th game missed on the injured list.
