Dodgers ‘Monitoring’ All-Star Trade Replacement for Max Muncy: Report

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost their Freeway Series matchup against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday as Clayton Kershaw’s return to the mound proved to be a disappointment.

Kershaw gave up five earned runs in just four innings en route to an 11-9 loss for the Dodgers. And while the team is still sitting in first place in the National League West division, its lead over the rival San Diego Padres is razor thin and Kershaw’s struggles were a reminder that some of the Dodgers’ veterans might not be able to carry them to another World Series.

As the Dodgers look to fortify a back-to-back championship roster, Max Muncy has been another long-time roster staple whose status on the team is being called into question.

Muncy is slashing just .211/.329/.345 with 46 strikeouts and just 30 hits so far this season — the worst production in what has been several years of declining prowess at the plate. And as the Dodgers consider external additions ahead of the midseason trade deadline, the team is reportedly eyeing a division rival infielder who could serve as a replacement for Muncy.

“Several teams, including the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, are closely monitoring Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon in case he’s traded this summer,” Bob Nightengale reported for USA Today.

Starting 44 games at third so far for the Rockies, McMahon is slashing just .209/.330/.379. But his All-Star campaign last season included 20 homers and 65 RBI, suggesting he has more in the tank than Muncy does.

As the Dodgers look to fortify a star-studded roster where they can, their interest in a player like McMahon suggests Muncy could be a familiar face with a reduced role come playoff time.
