Dustin May again went toe-to-toe with Corbin Burnes, and this time the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled out a 3-1 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the rubber match of their series at Dodger Stadium.

Burnes again largely had his way with the Dodgers as he initially got through five scoreless innings. Burnes retired the first 11 batters faced before Freddie Freeman reached on a two-out single in the fourth inning.

The Dodgers had another baserunner in the fifth inning when Max Muncy walked, but that was followed by Tommy Edman and Dalton Rushing both striking out.

Singles by Miguel Rojas and Mookie Betts wound up changing the Dodgers’ fortune in the bottom of the sixth. But note before Burnes struck out Freeman and got ahead 1-2 against Teoscar Hernández.

Burnes then hung a slider that Hernández crushed for what held as the game-winning three-run home run.

When Burnes faced the Dodgers at Chase Field, he held them scoreless over seven innings. That came in a return from being skipped over in one turn through the rotation and receiving a cortisone injection to treat right shoulder inflammation.

He had pitched 18 consecutive innings without allowing a run since returning.

Burnes’ effort kept pressure on May, who like in their matchup in Arizona earlier this month, also pitched well. May allowed two runs over seven innings in that outing, a tough-luck loss.

On Wednesday night, he limited the Diamondbacks to just one run. That came on Ketel Marte’s solo homer in the fourth inning.

May tied a season high with strikeouts, marking a second consecutive start with that many.

Dodgers bullpen answers call

A beleaguered group of Dodgers relief pitchers backed May with three scoreless innings. Jack Dreyer and Lou Trivino combined to pitch the seventh inning, and the right-hander remained in the game in the eighth.

Tanner Scott pitched for the second night in a row and this time converted the save opportunity without issue.
