The Baltimore Ravens were suspiciously quiet in free agency this offseason. With the exception of signing wideout DeAndre Hopkins, general manager Eric DeCosta stayed off the phone.

But it could be because DeCosta has a plan.

DeCosta and the Ravens are among the best in the league at utilizing compensatory picks to build their roster. Post-June 1 signings don’t affect the compensatory pick formula, meaning they can wait and sign free agents later in the offseason to build more draft capital for the next season.

Right now, Baltimore is projected to add two fifth-round picks and a seventh-round pick in next year’s selection show. By waiting to sign post-June 1 cuts, the team won’t lose those.

But who could they target? ESPN’s Bill Barnwell thinks he knows.

“Though they added much-needed help for their offensive line in the draft, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them look for some veteran interior help, with former Cardinals guard Will Hernandez the best remaining option,” Barnwell wrote. “They have also been happy to take on reclamation projects in the past, and there’s an obvious one available: former offensive tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who wore out his welcome with the Browns after being a top-10 pick in 2020.”

Barnwell continued that the Ravens might also target their defensive front seven, indicating that inside linebacker was an issue for the team last season when Trenton Simpson was benched due to poor play.

“Kyzir White is still available on the open market,” Barnwell continued. “Getting a linebacker with his experience and playmaking ability would represent good value for the Ravens.”
