A lot went wrong for Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill in the 2024 season, both on and off the field.
Off the field, he received wide publicity when he was detained by police right before the Dolphins kicked off their season against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 8 in a situation that didn’t sit right with many.
As for on the field, he put together easily his least productive season with Miami so far. In his first two campaigns as a Dolphin, he was a nightmare for opposing defenses, considering he finished both seasons with 1,700-plus receiving yards, and he even led the NFL in receiving yards in the 2023 campaign.
But Hill didn’t have a great 2024 season with the Dolphins no matter how anyone slices it, at least by Hill’s lofty standards, and he seems to recognize that. He said recently that he “f—– up” and “wasn’t in the lab how we supposed to be.”
Across 17 starts with the Dolphins in the 2024 campaign, he mustered fewer than 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in any season this decade and tied a career-low with six receiving touchdowns in addition.
Hill clearly didn’t play at the top of his game with the Dolphins a season ago and looked like a husk of the player he was earlier on in his Dolphins tenure, though maybe that’s partly because he was injured and partly because he had to fend without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for a solid chunk of the campaign.
The 30-year-old averaged just 56.4 receiving yards per game last season, and that number looked even worse in the six games Tagovailoa was sidelined for. Hill averaged 44.2 receiving yards per game and had probably his worst showing of the season in one of those contests. In an October loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Hill was practically a no-show with one catch for eight yards.
The Dolphins as a whole — along with Hill — are looking for a bounce-back season after they underperformed and missed the playoffs, and if Hill can return to being the type of player he was not too long ago, fans of the team should feel optimistic about how the offense will look.
