The Boston Red Sox have lost three consecutive games and are 5-5 in their last 10 games, 7.5 games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East.
Only a few games separate the Red Sox from one of the AL’s three Wild Card spots, but there’s been drama about which players should be helping them get there.
Boston’s top prospect, outfielder Roman Anthony, remains in Triple-A Worcester, and shortstop Marcelo Mayer was promoted to Major League Baseball and made his debut on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles.
Mayer, the future starting shortstop for the Red Sox, is splitting time with veteran Trevor Story. Many would argue, including Section 10 Podcast host Steve Perrault, that the Red Sox should release Story and let Mayer and the younger players receive more playing time.
“The time has come,” Perrault wrote on his personal X account on Monday. “DFA Trevor Story. Let the Anthony-Mayer-Campbell trio all grow up in the big leagues together. Alex Bregman is their hitting coach. Just do it.”

There’s a low probability the Red Sox designate Story for assignment, given the size of his contract and the chance they might need him later in the season, if an injury to a middle infielder were to occur.
However, there’s no question that the two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner is underperforming for yet another year. The former Colorado Rockies slugger is batting .167 in his last 10 games, and his previous home run was hit over two weeks ago.
Once one of the best shortstops in baseball, the 32-year-old has struggled with several injuries during his first four years in Boston, leading him to play in just 215 of the club’s possible 538 games over that span.
In 2025, Story is batting a poor .222/.269/.325 with a 66 OPS+ and six home runs in 52 games. A transition to the bench is possible if his offensive production at the plate does not improve.
