Novak Djokovic continues to compete at the highest level although he would have several valid reasons to end his career. The Serbian ace broke almost all men’s tennis records, his eternal rivals all withdrew and by winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics he put the icing on a career on the verge of perfection.
Although he has nothing left to prove, the 38-year-old from Belgrade loves tennis too much and wants to chase the further goal of winning the 25th Major of his career. Nole knows very well that it will be hard to reach this milestone because there are young champions who are dominating the professional tour right now – in particular Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz – but he does not want to give up and the idea of retirement has not crossed his mind yet.
Courier pays tribute to Nole
Speaking on ‘TNT Sports’ after Novak’s debut in Paris, American legend Jim Courier had nice words for the former world No.1: “We’re lucky to be able to see Nole in action again. His love for tennis is truly enormous and his presence helps forge the legacy of young talents such as Sinner and Alcaraz.
I am reminded of a comparison with Roger Federer at the beginning of his career. Pete Sampras was the man to beat at Wimbledon for many years, before Roger defeated him and became the new iconic face of the men’s tour.
Djokovic is allowing us to understand how great players like Jannik and Carlos are, waiting for other stars to emerge at the highest level.”
Roland Garros and Wimbledon are two fundamental tournaments to allow the Serbian to understand his current level and if he has a real chance of winning another Major title. If the legend from Belgrade realizes that he is too far from the current top players, the hypothesis of retirement could enter his mind as early as the end of this year.
A few days ago, Nole confessed that Rafa Nadal’s retirement has greatly affected his motivations in the recent period.
